At least 40 people were killed when an Air India passenger plane crashed near Ahmedabad in western India, local media reported on Thursday.

According to NDTV, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner carrying 242 people crashed into a residential area. Casualties on the ground are feared.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has suspended all operations. Reuters reports that passengers on board included citizens of India, Canada, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.

Police confirmed the crash near the airport. NDTV said there were survivors, and footage showed injured passengers being carried out of the terminal. Air India has yet to confirm flight details, but reports suggest the aircraft was en route from Ahmedabad to London.
