Baku hosts international conference on Guadeloupe’s decolonization

An international conference titled “Towards the Decolonization of Guadeloupe: Challenges and Perspectives” is underway in Baku, focusing on the French overseas department’s colonial legacy.
The event is jointly organized by the Baku Initiative Group, the People’s Union for the Liberation of Guadeloupe (UPLG), MIR-Guadeloupe, the International Committee of Black Peoples (CIPN), and the Movement for the Emergence of the Guadeloupean Nation (FKNG).
The conference brings together leaders of pro-independence political movements, NGOs, academics, and international experts.
Key topics include France’s continued colonial presence, social and economic inequalities, youth emigration, unemployment, and the impact of the toxic pesticide chlordecone.
Participants are also discussing the application of UN decolonization mechanisms and France’s failure to comply with related UN resolutions and declarations.
A cultural concert titled “Rhythms & Dances of Guadeloupe and Azerbaijan” will be held on June 25 at the Green Theatre in Baku.
