Water consumption in Tabriz has reached a critical threshold, with just 75 days of drinking water remaining, according to Yousef Ghaffarzadeh, Head of Iran’s East Azerbaijan Regional Water Company.

Speaking at a press conference, Ghaffarzadeh revealed that average water usage in the region is approximately 12,000 liters per second, rising above 13,000 liters during peak hours.

Annual drinking water consumption now totals 380 million cubic meters, a figure he described as requiring urgent and strategic management.

In addition, rural areas consume roughly 90 million cubic meters of water annually.

Ghaffarzadeh noted that five cities in East Azerbaijan province are currently classified as being in red status, signifying a water crisis, while nine others are nearing critical levels. Tabriz is among the cities already facing crisis conditions.
