Russia's 102nd military base in Armenia draws attention amid rising tensions

Russia's 102nd military base in Armenia draws attention amid rising tensions

Russia’s 102nd military base in Gyumri has become a focal point of speculation amid worsening relations between Armenia and Russia.

Ukraine’s military intelligence claimed it had obtained a secret Russian order to reinforce the base with additional personnel and equipment, allegedly recruiting contractors from Russia’s southern regions and the North Caucasus.

Armenian newspaper Graparak reported that military aircraft were landing daily at Shirak Airport, unloading tanks and ammunition for the base. However, these claims were denied by pro-Russian outlets, including blogger Mika Badalyan and the Telegram channel “Baghramyan 26,” which is linked to Armenian government circles.

No official statements have been issued by the Armenian or Russian defense ministries. The reports come as activists plan rallies on August 23 calling for Armenia’s withdrawal from the CSTO and the removal of the Russian base.

Meanwhile, the Armenian government continues to arrest pro-Russian figures, including billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, who announced the formation of a new political movement from prison. Analysts believe Russia could be preparing to support alternative political forces in Armenia.

Though Armenian authorities maintain a reserved stance on the 102nd base, that policy may shift if Moscow escalates political pressure.
