U.S. President Donald Trump is set to personally welcome Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Elmendorf-Richardson naval base in Anchorage, Alaska, NBC News reported, citing senior U.S. officials.

The summit will be held at the highest protocol level, though some logistical details are still being finalized. Putin is flying in from Magadan, Russia, while Trump's flight from Washington will take approximately seven hours.

The bilateral talks are scheduled to begin at 11:30 PM Baku time today.

According to Canada’s CBC, Trump aims to "turn the page" on the Russia-Ukraine war and fulfill his pledge to end hostilities. However, experts are skeptical that any breakthrough will be announced. Other key topics include nuclear arms control and broader security issues.

Reuters reports that Putin has proposed a potential nuclear agreement in exchange for a ceasefire in Ukraine. A Kremlin-linked source said Washington and Moscow have found “some common ground” ahead of the summit.

One compromise may include a phased reduction of Russia’s airstrikes. Trump has warned that if Putin rejects a truce, there will be “very harsh consequences.”
