Trump ready to impose secondary sanctions on Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron said Donald Trump is prepared to impose secondary sanctions on Russia if Moscow fails to engage in a credible peace process with Ukraine.

Speaking after talks in Washington, Macron said European leaders warned Trump against delaying peace efforts and expressed doubts over the Kremlin’s intentions.

The French leader also said European armed forces should play a key role in future peacekeeping operations in Ukraine. “Ukraine will need a strong army and allied support on the ground. That responsibility must fall to European partners,” he told NBC News.

Macron stressed that any peace deal without security guarantees would be doomed to fail: “Georgia in 2008, Crimea in 2014 — history shows that without guarantees, Russia will not honor its commitments.”
