Israel criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday over her remarks about reducing cooperation with Israel due to the situation in Gaza.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the statements were “regrettable” and echoed “false propaganda of Hamas and its allies.”

“Once again Europe sends a mistaken message that only strengthens Hamas and the radical axis in the Middle East,” Sa’ar said, calling Israel “the only democracy in the region” fighting for survival against enemies seeking its destruction.

He said von der Leyen was aware of Israel’s humanitarian efforts in Gaza coordinated with the EU, which had helped lower prices for basic goods. Sa’ar demanded Hamas release hostages and disarm, stressing that pressure on Israel would not bring peace but instead strengthen extremists.
