NASA scientists propose mushroom-based habitats on Mars

NASA scientists propose mushroom-based habitats on Mars

NASA scientists have proposed building future settlements on Mars using fungi, relying on local resources such as water, carbon dioxide and Martian dust. The approach is designed to reduce the cost and difficulty of shipping construction materials from Earth.

Earlier concepts focused on making bricks and glass from regolith, but the new idea — known as “mycotecture” — is seen as more radical.

NASA biologist Lynn Rothschild said the plan involves sending a lightweight frame and spores of specially engineered fungi. When water is added, the mycelium grows around the frame, creating a dense, airtight material for bricks or domes.

Small prototypes have already been grown on Earth. Researchers say the technology could one day allow Mars colonies to depend less on Earth and build “living” cities on the Red Planet.
