Protests erupt in Turkey after Gaza flotilla interception

Protests broke out in Ankara, Istanbul, Berlin, Barcelona and other cities after Israeli forces intercepted the “Sumud” humanitarian flotilla near Gaza’s territorial waters, media reported.

The flotilla of six ships, also called the “Flotilla of Steadfastness,” was carrying humanitarian aid in an attempt to break the blockade of Gaza. Up to ten ships had been expected to join the mission, which was supported by foreign ministers, politicians and lawmakers from Italy, Spain, Portugal and other countries.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said climate activist Greta Thunberg and “her friends” aboard the flotilla were safe and in good condition. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry condemned the interception as a “terrorist act” and a violation of international law. Israel said the flotilla’s only aim was provocation.
