Washington courts suspend marriage services due to shutdown

Courts in Washington, D.C., have suspended the issuance of marriage licenses and ceremonies due to the federal government shutdown, the city’s judicial system said on its official website.
Many court functions will continue during the shutdown, with judges and staff handling criminal, civil and family cases working without pay. Marriage licenses will not be issued, though residents will still be able to obtain copies of marriage documents and other vital records.
Under the U.S. Constitution, Washington, D.C., has a special status, with its local courts funded by the federal government and judges appointed by the president.
