Macron proposes radical steps against Russian oil exports

French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that European authorities adopt the practice of detaining Russian tankers at sea for several days or weeks to disrupt crude shipments, French media reported.

He said such measures could significantly undermine Russia’s oil exports and deal a serious blow to its federal budget.

Macron added that owners of the so-called “shadow fleet” would be forced to find alternative delivery routes, reducing the effectiveness of sanctions evasion.

He stressed that these steps should be implemented “in close coordination with NATO” to maximize disruption of existing supply chains. Even short delays, Macron said, could “destroy the business model” of those seeking to circumvent sanctions.
