Chechnya official urges women to wear headscarves, warns of 'awareness talks'
Aide to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, Amir Sugaipov, has called on Chechen women to wear headscarves as a sign of respect for local traditions, religion, and cultural norms.
Speaking to Russian media, Sugaipov said women with covered heads look “more dignified and beautiful,” and insisted the recommendation was not about the hijab, but “a simple scarf or band,” which he described as a modest element reflecting respect for Chechen customs.
He said those who disregard the call would face “educational conversations,” possibly involving their families. “We’ve already started this work on social media, calmly explaining to users why certain content is inappropriate. No one was punished—people understood and deleted the posts,” he said.
Sugaipov claimed public reaction had been largely positive. “Now we will continue promoting cultural dress in line with Chechen traditions,” he added.
