UK military leaders propose nuclear sharing pact with Germany – Telegraph

Senior British military officials have proposed that the UK begin talks with Germany on a potential nuclear-sharing agreement amid concerns over the future of U.S. security guarantees in Europe, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The initiative was backed by figures including a former UK Chief of the Defence Staff and a former NATO Secretary General, the report said. No formal negotiations have been launched, but the proposal reflects growing anxiety that the U.S. may step back from its post-WWII role as Europe’s primary security guarantor.

The UK’s current nuclear deterrent is deployed aboard four Vanguard-class submarines armed with U.S.-made Trident II (D5) ballistic missiles. London is also considering arming F-35A fighter jets with tactical nuclear weapons.
