Democrats eye Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin as alternative to Trump
Amid declining approval ratings for U.S. President Donald Trump and widening political divisions, Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin is emerging as a potential new Democratic leader.
A recent ABC News, Washington Post and Ipsos poll found that 67% of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, while 60% disapprove of Trump’s handling of foreign affairs. Still, 68% said the Democratic Party remains “out of touch with reality.”
Slotkin, 49, a former CIA analyst and deputy defense secretary for international security, gained national attention after a speech at the Strobe Talbott Center for Security, Strategy and Technology, where she accused Trump of being willing to use “the full force of the federal government against Americans he views as enemies.”
“Trump’s only goal is to ensure that he and those like him never have to give up power,” Slotkin said.
According to Politico, Slotkin is “testing a war plan” to revive the Democratic Party’s message and positioning ahead of the 2028 presidential race.
