Trump says Mamdani’s New York win undermines U.S. sovereignty
U.S. President Donald Trump said the victory of Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York’s mayoral election had “partly stripped the country of its sovereignty.” Speaking at a business forum in Miami, Trump recalled his own 2024 election win as “one of the most important in U.S. history.”
“We restored our sovereignty a year ago, but we lost part of it last night in New York — and we’ll take care of that,” Trump said.
He vowed to prevent “the building of communism in any form,” adding, “As long as I’m president, the United States will not become a communist country. We’ll stop this madness.”
Mamdani, who won the Nov. 4 election, pledged to “stop Trump and his followers.” He is to be sworn in as New York mayor on Jan. 1, 2026.
