Hungary and Slovakia to jointly challenge EU plan to ban Russian energy imports

Hungary and Slovakia to jointly challenge EU plan to ban Russian energy imports
08.12.2025 12:00

Hungary and Slovakia plan to file a joint case at the European Court to contest the EU’s proposal to ban imports of Russian gas and oil, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said on social platform X.

He said that immediately after the RePowerEU plan is adopted next week, the two countries will submit a motion requesting annulment of the document and seek its suspension during the legal proceedings.

Szijjártó argued that banning Russian energy imports would make secure energy supply for Hungary and Slovakia impossible and trigger a sharp rise in prices. He described the measure as a “massive legal fraud” and said it is clearly a sanctions tool that should require unanimous approval.

The minister added that the plan contradicts EU treaties, as energy policy falls under the competence of individual member states.
