From feelings of joy to utter despair, a new photo series attempts to chart the incredible range of emotions expressed by men and women.

Colorado-based portrait photographer Mike Larremore, 28, asked subjects to portray 16 different moods through facial expression and then combined the resulting images into individual photo collages. In one composition a man sweetly smiles at the camera for his first shot, grimaces in the second and then wearily yawns at the camera for his final close up.Another montage shows a young woman pulling a very amusing facial expression with her eyes crossed and lips pulled in opposite directions. This is then swiftly followed by a scowl.Mr Larremore told MailOnline that he gave all of the participants emotional cues for each pose such as 'bored' or 'angry' and 'angrier'.'In each shoot there was a transition from my providing cues to capturing these models making silly faces on their own and laughing,' he said.He says the reaction to the photo series has been very positive as people see it as something 'simple and lighthearted.'Many people ask why none of the subjects - captured from the shoulders-up - aren't wearing clothes.Explaining why he opted to make them appear 'naked' he said: 'Even something as simple as a plain white T-shirt comes in a variety of sizes and styles (baggy or tight, v-neck or round, etc). I decided that the most consistent solution to this issue was to shoot all the subjects with bare shoulders.'Mr Larremore says the most important thing he learned from the project is how emotions are 'universal' and affect people the same way no matter how old they are or where they come from.Indeed, a study last year by the University of Turku found that emotional states are associated with specific sensations regardless of a person’s cultureThe research visually shows that heartbroken people really do feel an ache in their chest, weak with sadness or feel happiness spreading over their entire body.Being in love makes a person feel a warm glow everywhere apart from their knees, perhaps hinting that there may be something in the popular saying that the object of a person’s affection makes them ‘weak at the knees’.Sadness leaves our limbs feeling weak and we are extra-aware of activity in our chest – and heart.Depression also leaves us feeling weak, while disgust is felt in the throat and digestive system. Basic emotions including anger and fear cause an increase in sensation in the upper chest area, which could be because we are subconsciously preparing for a fight. The findings come from Finnish researchers who showed 700 volunteers films and read them stories designed to evoke particular emotions. The men and women were then given outlines of bodies and asked to color in the parts they felt became more active or less active. The results were the same across cultures, with love ‘felt’ right down to people’s toes and happiness suffusing the whole body with feeling.Mr Larremore's photo series, titled the Faceboard Project, which focu ses on facial emotional expressions, has attracted more than 1,400 'likes' since he uploaded it to his Tumblr account last week.(dailymail.co.uk)ANN.Az
