The REAL reason you see so many baby posts is

It may feel like social media is inundated with parents' pictures of their babies, but baby-related posts aren't actually as prevalent as they seem.

According to a study published this month in the Proceedings of CSCW, mothers actually post to Facebook much less often after they have a baby, and a good portion of what they do post has nothing to do with their child. So why do some people constantly complain about baby pictures? One factor could be that baby posts get more likes, thereby probably making them more prominent on Facebook newsfeeds.Indeed, while the algorithm determining which posts get top billing is not known, likes and comments most likely have something to do with it.Meredith Ringel Morris, a mother-of-two and the author of the study, told Slate.com: 'As an educated guess, the more likes and comments a post gathers, the higher probability there is that that post will appear in other people’s newsfeeds.'Contrary to what appears on a newsfeed, however, the study - which looked at the Facebook activity of 412 new mothers - found that moms post most about their newborn right after he or she is born. After the first month, though, posts about the baby get less and less frequent.'I think there's a sense in the popular media that it's just all babies, babies, babies,' said Mrs Morris. 'But, in fact, posting about the baby is only a relatively small portion of what mothers are doing.'Still, the antagonism against baby-related Facebook activity is such that several inventions have been created expressly to filter it out.One such technology called UnBaby.me has attracted around 200,000 users since it was launched in 2012.The website scans a Facebook user's newsfeed for baby-related posts and phrases - including 'just learned to walk', 'eating solid foods' and 'look at those cheeks'.It then replaces them with pictures of stars like Benedict Cumberbatch and Justin Bieber, or entertaining photos of animals wearing clothes. And blogs such as STFU Parents discuss the habit modern mothers and fathers have of sharing every detail of their children's lives on social media.Chris Baker, the co-founder of UnBaby.me, said this tendency to overshare is annoying, especially for childless friends.'It's like a certain part of the brain gets activated where they feel this crushing desire to share with the world their little creations,' he told The New York Times in 2012.(dailymail.co.uk)ANN.Az
