Azeri opposition leader fired from Baku State University

Camil Hasanli, a professor of history at BakuState University, says his contract with Azerbaijan’s oldest university wasterminated because of his participation in the October 9 presidential election.

Hasanli, 61, was nominated by the NationalCouncil of Democratic Forces opposition alliance to challenge incumbent IlhamAliyev, who won a third term in office. Hasanli gained only 5.5 percent of thevote, according to official figures.

“My main goal was to prepare good historians. Iregret to have lost that opportunity,” he said in an interview with Mediaforumnews website.

Hasanli had been teaching at the university since1980.
