Group set up to continue talks on Trans-Caspian gas pipeline

The European Union, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey will set up a permanent working group to continue talks on the planned Trans-Caspian natural gas pipeline, Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Natiq Aliyev said.
The decision was made during a recent meeting of energy ministers from the three countries and an official of the European Commission, Aliyev told reporters in Baku on Wednesday.
Turkmenistan is interested in gas supplies to Europe via the planned pipeline and has 30 billion cubic meters of fuel to supply through the route every year, the minister said.
"But it is not clear who is going to build the pipeline, who is going to finance it,” Aliyev said.
Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission’s Vice President for Energy Union, proposed creating a consortium of leading energy companies of Europe to build the pipeline, although no decision has been made on that yet, he said.
Russia is opposed to the idea of building a Trans-Caspian pipeline, citing environmental reasons.
The project is supported by the United States and the European Union.
