If you want to protect your iPhone from getting scratched... it might be best to avoid this one.

The handgun-shaped case has just gone on sale and could land you in a whole lot of trouble.

US police are so bothered by the number of people using the new case that they've issues a warning to members of the public.

Ocean County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Al Della Fave posted a series of images of people using the smartphone cases along with an explanation of some of the dangers.

"A police officer's job is hard enough, without having to make a split-second decision in the dark of night when someone decides without thinking to pull this out while stopped for a motor vehicle violation," the social media post reads.

Mr Face, of Tom's River, New Jersey, USA, revealed that the majority of people who draw weapons against police, do so from their back pocket – which is why the cases are so dangerous.

However – he admitted there have yet to be any reported incidents linked with the iPhone cases.

New York City Police Department's 112th Precinct also tweeted about the dangers of carrying a smartphone in the gun-shaped cases.

"I would NOT suggest purchasing this cell phone case, which was designed to look like a firearm," the tweet reads.

The cases are available on a number of high profile US online retailers and reportedly start from just $4.99... or £3.20.
