Several hundred residents staged a rally on Jan. 21 in the village of Nardaran near Baku to protest against French newspaper cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The protesters held banners reading "We love our prophet”, and "France is afraid of Islam".

They set fire to US, Israeli, French and Armenian flags.

Nardaran is a devout Shiite Muslim village north of the Azerbaijani capital.
