When summer comes, Americans itch to hit the open road and, if a recent jump in recreational vehicle sales is any indicator, they plan to do so in style this year.
Shipments of RVs, long the nation's symbol of freedom in the great outdoors, are up 8 percent from last year, according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association.
'In March alone, wholesale shipment of all RVs spiked 8.5% to 36,535 units, the best March totals since 2007,' reads the trade association's report on the season's market trends.
But these buyers are all new to the motor home game. Some RV owners have long understood the perks riding with your motel room in tow.
The most hardcore RV lovers among them have even put the blood, sweat and tears usually reserved for building one's stationary home into creating customized RV's.
These unbelievably unique RVs blow the everyday Winnebago out of the water with features like accordion walls that nearly triple one RV's roominess, custom-tiled showers and kitchens, cedar-lined bedrooms and other luxuries for lovers of stylish highway travel.
