Russian energy giant Rosneft has shown interest in Azerbaijan’s natural gas field of Absheron, which is being developed by France’s Total jointly with Socar and Gaz de France, Socar President Rovnag Abdullayev said.
Rosneft may join the exploration and development of the Caspian Sea field off Azerbaijan, Abdullayev told reporters in the Azeri capital, Baku.
Socar and Rosneft established a joint venture on May 26 to explore Azerbaijan and Russia for oil and gas.
The Azeri state producer, for its part, is interested in Russian deposits in Siberia, Abdullayev said.
Absheron, discovered in 2011, may contain 300 billion cubic meters of gas and 45 million tons of condensate, or light oil, according to an estimate by Socar.
Total and Socar each hold 40 percent of the project, while GDF Suez (GSZ) has the remaining 20 percent.
The deposit is planned to start production in 2020.
