Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has criticized western powers’ intervention in the Islamic countries, the Islamic Republic’s IRNA news agency reported Jan. 2.

"Why strangers should be able to make decisions upon the fate of the Muslims?” Rouhani said, criticizing the US military presence in the Muslim countries.

Rouhani made the remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of the 5th International Holy Quran Competition for Muslim Students in Tehran.

"Their military forces in the Muslims’ territories make decisions for the Islamic world,” Rouhani said.

The Iranian president called on the Muslims to follow guidelines of the Quran and be united to realize the Islamic world’s interests.

Rouhani said that "the Quran shows the path of guidance, progress, development, civilization and unity.”

The 5th International Holy Quran Competition for Muslim Students began at Tehran’s Milad Tower on Jan.1 and will continue for four days, with representatives of 47 countries participating.
