Russia accuses US and NATO of expanding influence in Latin America

Russia has taken note of the increasing attempts by the United States and its NATO allies to extend the alliance's influence into Latin America, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Latin America Department Alexander Schetinin told Izvestiya.

Shchetinin highlighted NATO programs that include "assistance in reforming security forces, training specialized experts, and acquiring Western models, as well as joint military training activities."

The diplomat pointed out the apparent desire of American military personnel to influence the formation of the political and economic agenda of Latin American countries. "One of the most active participants in this process is the commander of the US Southern Command, four-star General Laura Richardson," Schetinin said.
