The Russian side has filed a statement with the ICAO Council about violation of the Convention on International Civil Aviation by Western countries, which by their actions jeopardized the safety of air traffic, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, reported from TASS.
"The basis for initiating the proceedings was the use by the defendants of unlawful unilateral restrictive measures of a discriminatory nature in relation to the Russian Federation and its airlines. In particular, a ban on the use of airspace for aircraft of Russian airlines, a ban on the supply of aircraft and spare parts for them, a ban on the maintenance and provision of insurance services for aircraft, the detention of aircraft abroad, and restriction of access to meteorological information for air navigation,” the ministry said.
Some 37 states are defendants, including the US, Canada, Britain and all members of the EU. "By their actions, the defendant states jeopardized the safety of international civil aviation and seriously undermined mutual trust, which has been the basis of the international aviation system for almost 80 years,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
The message indicates that the Russian Federation, as one of the leading aviation powers, firmly intends to seek the cessation of all these violations of the provisions of the convention through ICAO mechanisms for resolving disagreements. "We expect that the ICAO Council will effectively and impartially respond to the situation in the context of an unprecedented large-scale disregard by the defendants of their international legal obligations,” the ministry concluded.
