Most Kentucky Derby thoroughbreds finish the 1.25-mile race in about two minutes. But it is the traditions surrounding the annual Louisville, Kentucky horse race that have made it an American institution, from drinking mint juleps (cocktails made of bourbon, mint and sugar) to presenting the winner with a blanket of 564 red roses (giving the Derby the nickname “The Run for the Roses”).
