A gunman stormed a house in Azerbaijan’s western Goranboy District, killing seven members of the same family, including a three-year-old boy.
Two others were hospitalized with injuries.
It is the deadliest single incident in Azerbaijan since a university shooting rampage five years ago.
Police arrested the suspected assailant, Rafiq Huseynov, who was a relative of the family. The dead included his wife.
The motive for the killing is unclear. According to Qafqazinfo news website, Huseynov threw a hand grenade into the house, which was owned by his father-in-law. Huseynov’s wife had returned to her family house after quarrelling with him.
Police released the names of the dead. They are Dilazbar Mammadova, 56, Farqana Mammadova, 31, Ofelya Mammadova, 63, Havayat Mammadova, 51, Sudaba Huseynova, 30, Namiq Mammadov, 24 and Isa Mammadov, 3.
The injured were identified as Natiq Mammadov, 28, and Gunel Mammadova, 26.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
