SOCAR gas projects won’t be affected by Russia-Turkey pipe

SOCAR President Rovnaq Abdullayev has said projects to deliver Azerbaijani gas to Europe via the so-called South Gas Corridor will not be affected by the planned Russia-Turkey pipeline.

"As we have already said, we are not rivals (with Gazprom),” Abdullayev told reporters in Baku on Dec. 8. "Each of us has its own market.”

The South Gas Corridor will comprise three pipelines stretching all the way from Baku to southern Italy via Georgia, Turkey, Greece and Albania.

These will include the South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion (SCPX), Trans-Anatolia pipeline (Tanap) and Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).

Abdullayev said Tanap partners have received no offer to deliver Russian gas to Europe.

"All issues have been resolved, and I think there will be no problems with the implementation of the South Gas Corridor projects,” he said, adding that Azerbaijan has signed contracts to export gas to Europe until 2046.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Dec. 2 Gazprom scrapped the planned South Stream pipeline to Bulgaria because of objections from the European Union and agreed with Turkey to build a new one under the Black Sea.
