SOCAR refuses to construct fossil-fuel power station in Izmir

SOFAZ has refused to construct fossil-fuel power station in Aliaga, Izmir, Turkey, the Initiative Against Fossil Fuels released statement.

The station with the planned capacity of 672 MW had to meet the need of SOCAR’s oil refinery in Aliaga for energy. However, the EBRD and IFC have stopped funding due to interference of Greenpeace Akdeniz, Bankwatch and Banktrack.

"After Turkish civil society’s rally in Aliaga in May and our interference, 7 credit institutions informed us about stopping funding. SOCAR’s this decision is our victory and proved how we are right”, the statement said.

Head of Environment and Culture Platform Bahadir Ozturk said they will fight against construction of over 70 fossil-fuel power stations.

Bankwatch stated that SOCAR made the right decision.
