SOCAR Trading delivers first LNG shipment to Malta

Azeri state oil company SOCAR's trading division has delivered its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment to Malta for an LNG-to-power project, the firm said.

The Electrogas Malta consortium, in which SOCAR Trading holds a 33 percent stake, has built a 200-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine plant and LNG facilities at the Delimara Power Station site in south-east Malta.

Once operational, it is likely to meet approximately 50 percent of Malta's electricity demand. It gave no time frame.

SOCAR Trading officials said in a statement that the shipment was the company's first delivery of LNG.

"The LNG market is growing and SOCAR's participation in this market is very important. In this way, SOCAR will transport gas to its customers not only through pipelines, but also in the form of LNG," the statement said.

SOCAR Trading has also acquired a 26 percent stake in a new consortium, established by French oil and gas company Total and Cote d'Ivoire's State Oil Company, to build a terminal to import LNG, the firm said.
