A 55-year-old worker at Azerbaijan’s state energy company Socar died of heart attack after being told of an imminent job cut.

Ismayil Umudov, a resident of central Salyan District, was very distressed by the news, as he was the only breadwinner in his family of six, his brother said, according to the Azeri service of RFE/RL.

Umudov passed away on Jan. 2, two weeks before he had to sign a letter of resignation.

Socar President Rovnaq Abdullayev said in December that the company would cut seven Soviet-style trusts at its drilling department to meet modern auditing standards.
