Synchronised swimmer in induced coma after Baku bus accident

Austrian synchronised swimmer Vanessa Sahinovic has been placed in an induced coma in a Vienna hospital after she was hit by a bus in the athletes' village ahead of the European Games in Azerbaijan.

The 15-year-old has suffered multiple fractures but is not in a critical condition, the Austrian Press Agency reported Friday.

"Vanessa Sahinovic has suffered very many fractures and further operations will be necessary," Christoph Mierau, spokesman for the Vienna Hospital Association, was quoted as saying. Sahinovic and two other Austrian synchronised swimmers were Thursday struck by a shuttle bus while walking on the pavement in the athletes' village in Baku.

She and team-mate Luna Payer, who suffered a fracture, were flown to Vienna for treatment. The third swimmer, Verena Breit, returned to the village following treatment in Baku. Austrian Olympic Committee officials and ambassador Axel Wech were planning to meet security authorities in Baku Friday to discuss the accident.

A Baku 2015 spokesperson said Thursday:  "The incident is now a matter of a police investigation and until that process is complete we will be making no further statement."
