An artist's impression of the 'Statue of Unity’ to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first deputy prime minister, will stand at 597ft when completed in 42 months. It is almost 100ft taller than China’s Spring Temple Buddha, the world’s current tallest statue at 502ft. It will be almost twice as high as the Statue of Liberty in New York, which is 305ft. Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square stands at 170ft. The memorial will be set on a river island close to the Narmada Dam and will be connected to an amusement park and a garden in Sardar Patel’s honour by a bridge.The current tallest statue is the Spring Temple Buddha located in the Zhaocun township of Lushan County, Henan, China. It is a statue depicting Vairocana Buddha and was built in 2002. It is 128 m (420 ft), which includes a 20 m (66 ft) lotus throne.The current 2nd tallest is the Laykyun Setkyar standing Buddha in Burma. It is 130 m (427 ft) high including the base and was built in 2008.The 3rd tallest is the Ushiku Daibutsu which is located in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Completed in 1993 it is 120 meters (394 feet) tall, including the 10m high base and 10m high lotus platform. An elevator takes visitors up to 85m off the ground, where an observation floor is located.The Guanyin of the South Sea of Sanya is 108-metre (354 ft) tall and is sited on the south coast of China's island province Hainan near the Nanshan Temple of Sanya.The sculptures of the Emperors Yan and Huang are the fifth tallest statues in the world at 106 metres. They depict two of the earliest Chinese emperors, Yan Di and Huang Di. The construction lasted 20 years and was completed in 2007. They are located in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, People's Republic of China. According to experts, the statues commemorate politics and the economy.Sendai Daikannon, located in Sendai, Japan, is the sixth tallest statue in the world at 100 metres (328 feet). An elevator takes tourists to the top of the statue, which depicts the Japanese Buddhist Bodhisattva Kannon. The 7th tallest statue is Guishan Guanyin of the Thousand Hands and Eyes in China (unfortunately we don't have a photo of it!). This gilded bronze monument depicting Avalokitesvara stands 99 m (325 ft) tall, and is located in Weishan, Changsha, Hunan, People's Republic of China.The Peter the Great Statue is a 98-metre-high monument to Peter the Great, located at the western confluence of the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal in central Moscow. It was designed by the Georgian designer Zurab Tsereteli to commemorate 300 years of the Russian Navy, which Peter the Great established. It was erected in 1997 and is the eighth tallest statue in the world. It weighs around 1,000 tons and contains 600 tons of stainless steel, bronze and copper.The Great Buddha of Thailand is the tallest statue in Thailand, and the ninth tallest in the world. Located in the Wat Muang Monastery in Ang Thong province, this statue stands 92 m (300 ft) high, and is 63 m (210 ft) wide. Construction began in 1990, and was completed in 2008.
