This could be the most irritating thing Apple has EVER done

Everyone wants their smartphone to be slimmer and lighter.

But one thing that’s stopping smartphones from getting stick-thin is the headphone port.

This integral part of the phone hasn’t changed for years but Apple may be about to do exactly that.

According to Japanese blog MacOtakara, the US tech giant is considering ditching the 3.5mm port on its iPhone 7.

Instead of plugging your cans into this ageing socket, Apple could use its lightning charging port to beam music to your ears.

Not only would using this port mean Apple could shave some weight off its phone but music quality could also be improved.

Although making the iPhone 7 slimmer would clearly be welcomed, it could also cause a backlash from iPhone fans.

Apple's smartphone has become a popular way to listen to music and having an expensive pair of headphones that won’t fit will not win Apple any popularity contests.

This new rumour comes just months after another report suggested that Apple may change its headphone port.

Apple apparently patented a new technology for connecting headphones with a new port called the 'D jack’.

This tiny socket has a tiny diameter of just 2mm rather than the current 3.5mm.

This wouldn’t be the first time Apple has angered fans with changes to its iPhone design.

In 2012 Apple caused havoc when it changed the charging port on the iPhone 5.

This left many iPhone owners unable to use docks and speakers without buying an adaptor.

It’s unclear if Apple will ever make the leap with a new headphone port and there’s certainly no sign of it on the brilliant new iPhone 6s.

So for now your old cans are safe, but with the iPhone 7 expected to include some radical design changes things could be a lot different next year.
