Top German diplomat says Berlin may send peacekeepers to Ukraine

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock did not rule out that Berlin could send peacekeepers to Ukraine if a ceasefire was achieved, the DPA news agency said, reported from TASS.

According to the media outlet, Baerbock said at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels that German soldiers could be used to ensure peace.

She also believes that along with security guarantees for Ukraine in the form of NATO membership, "international presence aimed at ensuring a ceasefire" could be considered.

The German foreign minister added that Berlin "will strive to support" all efforts aimed at achieving peace.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on February 26 that around 20 Western countries taking part in a Paris meeting on further assistance for Kyiv had discussed the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. According to Macron, no consensus was reached on the issue then, but such a possibility cannot be ruled out in the future. Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the deployment of foreign troops to Ukraine would lead to severe, if not irreversible, consequences.
