UFC fans mourn after former champ dies aged 44

The 44-year-old was admitted to hospital with pneumonia but later passed away after his heart failed, his family confirmed.

"The Monster" appeared in good health during his most recent public appearance.

He attended the MMA Awards in hometown Las Vegas, smiling and posing for pictures with wife Elizabeth.

His family released a statement remembering the "gentle soul."

It said: "With saddened hearts, the Randleman family confirms the passing of Kevin "The Monster" Randleman.

"Behind the name, was a gentle soul and loyal friend whom will be missed by many who loved him beyond the cage.

The Ohio State University, UFC, MMA, Sandusky, Ohio communities shared in the loss of Kevin’s passing.

"While traveling on business, Kevin became ill and unexpectedly passed due to complications from pneumonia."

Former opponent and UFC champion Randy Couture today paid an emotional tribute to the legend.

He wrote on Instagram: "You lived a life unimagined by most with a philosophy of someone who seemed to know both sides of the coin. We battled vicious demons , some side by side, and reveled [sic] in the victories always willing to share the spoils with any one in need."

Retired fighter Julie Kedzie added: "Kevin Randleman picked me up and put me on his shoulder after my first fight. Made me feel like a hero. RIP to a Monster with a heart of gold."Kevin — whose brutal fighting tactics won him his nickname — learnt many of his moves while growing up in a tough Ohio neighbourhood with 10 brothers and sisters.

He began his sparkling athletic career after taking up a place on the wrestling team at Ohio State University.

After several years of successful UFC matches he went on to take the crown as the heavyweight champion in 1999.

But his successes were embroiled in controversy after failing a drug test.

Brutal beatings in the ring had a profound affect on Kevin, and in the same year he was in hospital due to serious kidney damage.

Kevin leaves four children including daughter Jasmine and two sons Calvin and Santino.
