Ukraine plans to set up production of nuclear fuel as alternative to Russian fuel

Ukraine hopes to set up its own production of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants in three years to replace the Russian fuel, including in the European market, the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy said, reported from TASS.

Ukraine has already started production of components for fuel assemblies of the WWER-1000 type, and subsequently plans to launch the production of assemblies for WWER-440 reactors. The project is being implemented by Energoatom in cooperation with the US company Westinghouse, the ministry said.

According to the agency, the plan is to complete licensing and enter the industrial production of shanks this year and heads (elements of fuel assemblies) in 2024. They will be used to produce nuclear fuel for the needs of Energoatom at the Westinghouse plant in Västerås, Sweden.

According to the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko, cited by the press service of the department, in the future Ukraine expects to become a supplier of nuclear fuel to European countries where nuclear power plants operate with WWER-440 reactors, for which there are no analogues to Russian fuel.
