UN High Commissioner begins his visit to Ukraine in Irpin and Bucha

Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, visited Bucha and Irpin during his official visit to Ukraine, reported from the UN press service.

Turk is in Ukraine on a four-day visit at the invitation of the country's government.

"I am currently in Ukraine in solidarity with the victims of this terrible war, which was started by the invasion of the Russian Federation on February 24. I am here to show solidarity, especially during these difficult winter months,” he said.

He stressed that winter for many Ukrainians is fraught with great difficulties, noting that many Ukrainians are cold and the electricity and heating turn off often.

Recalling the tragic events in Irpin and Bucha, Turk stressed that the war, as well as such murders, are utterly unacceptable and senseless. He called for an end to the killing of civilians, as well as respect for international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

As part of the visit, the High Commissioner will meet with senior government officials and civil society representatives, as well as with victims of crimes and relatives of missing or captured civilians and prisoners of war.

He will visit not only Kyiv and the towns of the Kyiv Oblast, but also Kharkiv, Izyum and Uzhhorod. He is scheduled to hold a press conference for journalists on December 7, dedicated to the results of his official visit.
