UN reveals number of civilians killed in Russian-Ukrainian war

The war in Ukraine since February 2022 has led to the death of at least 8,800 civilians, over 14,900 were injured, UN Deputy to the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Adedeji Ebo said at a meeting of the Security Council.

He noted that since February 24, 2022, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has counted a total of 23,821 civilian casualties in Ukraine.

The actual numbers are likely much higher, he noted. Most civilian deaths and injuries are caused by the use of wide-area explosive weapons, including heavy artillery, multiple rocket launchers and rockets, as well as airstrikes, he said.
