US may sell F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye in exchange for Sweden joining NATO

US may sell F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye in exchange for Sweden joining NATO
11.07.2023 11:00
US President Joe Biden is actively working to reach an agreement with Türkiye to support Sweden's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance in exchange for unblocking the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Ankara, reported from The Guardian.

Over the weekend, it became clear that Sweden's NATO membership is directly linked to Türkiye’s demands to the US Congress to allow the sale of F-16 fighter jets and the conditions under which the sale can be allowed.

The US Congress opposes the sale of fighters due to the contradictions between Türkiye and Greece, as well as Ankara's purchase of the Russian air defense system.

Biden said he now supports the sale of F-16s to Türkiye, but that it is not in his power to authorize the sale, as Congress has veto right.
