US Open: Eleven-year-old Lucy Li prepares to tee-off

Eleven-year-old Lucy Li will become the youngest qualifier to compete at the US Women's Open when she tees off at Pinehurst on Thursday.

Li will beat the record held by fellow American Lexi Thompson, who qualified for the 2007 tournament aged 12.This week's event is taking place on the same course as the men's tournament for the first time ever.Scotland's Catriona Matthew and England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff are among the Britons competing.South Korea's Inbee Park will defend her title in a field which also includes the world number one Stacy Lewis.Lewis, the 2013 British Women's Open champion, has been particularly outspoken in her disapproval of Li's participation."I'm not a big fan of it," she said. "I like to see kids learn how to win before they come get beat up out here. If it was my kid, I wouldn't let her play in her the US Open qualifier aged 11."Despite her tender years, Li is not the youngest ever player to compete at the tournament - that record is still held by Beverley Klass, who competed in 1967 aged 10 without having to qualify.Li will tee off alongside Canada's Jessica Wallace and American Catherine O'Donnell, while Park and Lewis have been grouped together, along with the USA's Catherine Talley.England's number-one ranked golfer Charley Hull will miss the tournament after she failed to qualify.(BBC)Bakudaily.az
