US says there’s no military solution to Karabakh conflict

The tragic loss of life in the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia reminds us that there can’t be a military solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said Jen Psaki, a spokeswoman for the US Department of State.

“Only a lasting and peaceful settlement can bring stability and prosperity and reconciliation to the region. As a co-chair of the Minsk Group, the United States remains firmly committed to working with the sides, both sides, to achieve peace,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Department of State said in its country report on human rights practices for 2013: “Separatists, with Armenia’s support, continued to control most of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven other Azerbaijani territories.

“The final status of Nagorno-Karabakh remained the subject of international mediation by the OSCE Minsk Group, cochaired by Russia, France, and the United States. During the year shooting incidents continued along the militarized line of contact separating the two sides in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and resulted in numerous casualties on both sides. Figures for civilian casualties along the line of contact were not available.”
