Webb howler overshadows Arsenal FA Cup win over Liverpool

Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 in the fifth round of the FA Cup but the post-match headlines are sure to be dominated by a simply shocking decision by referee Howard Webb.

In the 63rd minute with the score as it finished, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came in with a thumping challenge on Luis Suarez in the box, long after the ball had gone, but somehow Webb waved away the visitors' penalty appeals despite seemingly being in the perfect position. You can see the incident in the GIF below…Webb seemed to make another error 10 minutes later at the other end when Steven Gerrard should have received a second yellow-card for a tackle on Oxlade-Chamberlain but Webb did not even give a free-kick.It is not the first time Webb has made unwanted headlines for himself. He was roundly criticised for the way he refereed the 2010 World Cup final, especially for only giving Nigel De Jong a yellow card for a kick to Xabi Alonso's chest.Away from the Suarez decision, Liverpool dominated the second half but somehow lost 2-1.The home side moved 1-0 ahead against the run of play when Oxlade-Chamberlain drove the ball into the net for the opening goal from a loose ball before Lukas Podolski added the second three minutes after the break with Oxlade-Chamberlain playing provider. It was a minor miracle how Liverpool were behind, but Steven Gerrard gave them hope when he converted a penalty around the hour-mark after Podolski had made a clumsy late challenge on Suarez. That was soft, but there was no doubt about the penalty that never was with Oxlade-Chamberlain late on Suarez, who smiled in disbelief at Webb decided not to award the visitors another penalty.Arsenal relied on goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to keep the visiting side at bay as they moved just three games away from their first trophy in nine years.(uk.eurosport.yahoo.com)ANN.Az
