WHO warns of global measles threat

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that if children are not vaccinated, the global threat of measles will remain, reported from WHO.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the coverage of measles vaccination in countries has decreased.

As a result of this trend, measles cases in 2022 increased by 18% and deaths by 43% globally compared to 2021: "According to a new estimate by the WHO and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this situation means that the estimated number of measles cases, mostly children, has reached 9 million and the number of deaths - 136,000. Measles cases pose a risk to all countries and communities where vaccination coverage is poor. The role of the vaccine in preventing widespread outbreaks of measles is invaluable. Between 2000 and 2022 alone, the measles vaccine prevented 57 million deaths from the disease globally."
