World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro sentenced to 10 months in prison

The retired footballer – who played for the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus – was slapped with the term after his villa was seized by police during a planning abuse investigation.

The 41-year-old was found swimming in the property's pool with his wife Daniela Arenoso after a ruling banned him from having access to the home during the probe.

Cannavaro, who captained Italy to their 2006 World Cup victory, has now been handed the 10-month jail term.

His wife and brother Paolo, who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo, have also been hit with custodial sentences.

All three have appealed and will therefore have their sentences suspended until a final court judgement is made.

The convictions come on the back Cannavaro being investigated for tax evasion last year

In October, Italian police seizedas much of €1m (£735,000) worth of goods from the Naples home, as well as a €180,000 (£130,000) yacht.

It has been reported that Cannavaro’s company FD Service allegedly owes over €1m in unpaid taxes - from 2005 to 2010.

The trio will discover their fate in the next few months.

The former centre-back, who is the only defender to win a FIFA's covered World Player of the Year award, is currently the coach of Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande.

He also played a large role on the BBC punditry team covering the World Cup last year.
