Concrete is for more than car parks and roadways. From the Roman Pantheon to the Sydney Opera House, concrete -- the world's most widely used man-made material -- has long been employed to create some of the world's most memorable spaces.

100 Contemporary Concrete Buildings, a new release from Taschen, shows how the architects of today are finding new and increasingly inventive ways to use it.

"A kind of "liquid stone" at the outset, it is malleable, durable and, in the right hands, capable of prodigious feats of engineering," writes author Philip Jodidio.

Recently, these feats have varied from the cold functionality of Brutalist architecture, to the curvy futurism of Zaha Hadid. Here are some of the modern highlights.
