U.S. President Donald Trump refrained from using the term “genocide” in his annual message commemorating the events of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire, referring to them instead as “one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century.”

The statement was published on the official website of the White House on Wednesday.

Trump also avoided using the term during his previous presidency, despite calls from Armenian-American groups and lawmakers urging formal recognition.
