Another Istanbul district mayor arrested in corruption probe

A Turkish court on Tuesday ordered the arrest of Beyoglu district mayor Inan Guney, making him the ninth district head in Istanbul detained as part of a corruption investigation at city hall, Turkish media reported.
Guney, a member of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), was detained on Aug. 15. He became mayor of central Beyoglu in March 2024 with the support of more than 49% of voters.
The court ordered the arrest of 17 people in the case, including Guney, who is accused of receiving illicit income from advertising billboards. He has denied the allegations.
Istanbul’s suspended mayor Ekrem Imamoglu has remained in custody since March.
